Is online speech therapy for kids really effective for kids to learn to say the R sound?

Yes!

R can be a tricky sound to learn for many kids. If your child is young, you probably don’t need to worry yet since R is one of the later-developing sounds in English. But if your child is still struggling with the R sound in the first grade, you may want to consult with a speech therapist to see if your child could benefit from speech therapy.

Through teletherapy, I have been able to help kids learn to say their R sound from a distance without needing to be in-person! I’ve helped many kids go from not being able to say the R sound correctly at all to saying R in conversation with family and friends. All through teletherapy!

Here are 5 strategies I use during teletherapy to help kids learn to say the R sound.

  1. Screen share. I show them a diagram of tongue and jaw so they know which parts of their mouth make the R sound.

  2. Use the camera. I get my mouth close to the camera so they can see where I put my tongue when I make the R sound.

  3. Show a video. I have a video of the tongue that shows kids exactly where their tongue needs to be for R.

  4. Lick the “peanut butter.” I have kids lick pretend “peanut butter” from the roof of their mouth while moving their tongue back to get their tongue in the right place for the R sound.

  5. Have kids use the self-view camera. The self-view camera on video conferencing helps kids be able to see what they are doing with their mouth and tongue while they do it. Great visual feedback for the R sound!
