When you think of speech therapy, you may immediately think of a speech therapist working with a child on learning to say sounds correctly. Did you know that in addition to learning how to say sounds, there are many other things that speech therapy can work on? Here are just a few reasons that kids can benefit from working with a speech therapist.

  1. Speech Sounds. The sounds that make up the words your child says. Speech therapy can help your child pronounce speech sounds so that others can understand what your child is saying.

  2. Receptive Language. The words that concepts that your child understands. Speech therapy can help your child learn to follow directions, identify pictures and understand concepts such as “long/short” and words like “before” and “after.”

  3. Expressive Language. The language and words that your child says or communicates. Speech therapy can help your child increase their vocabulary and learn to put words together to form sentences.

  4. Phonological Awareness. A fundamental pre-reading skill that helps kids work with sounds, such as rhyming and counting syllables in words. Speech therapy can help your child understand these concepts and build a strong foundation for reading skills.

  5. Social Communication. The neurotypical social language used to communicate with others such as participating in conversations, turn-taking and nonverbal language. Speech therapy can help children understand neurotypical social skills.
